Oceans In Space

Narrated by Avery Brooks (Captain Benjamin Sisko of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

Two of the most profound questions humans can ask is "Where do we come from?" and "Are we alone?" It is only natural that we look across the gulfs of space to search for other inhabited worlds.Oceans In Space is a journey of exploration that seeks out places where conditions are favorable for life to exist. This original and thought-provoking presentation highlights the search for extrasolar planets and an understanding of the conditions necessary to form and sustain life. Inspired in part by the goals of NASA's Origins Program -- an effort to answer the enduring questions that spur space exploration -- this program introduces audiences to the diversity of life on our home planet even as humans embark on the search for life in the universe. The show travels back in time more than five billion years, to trace the origin and evolution of the solar system from a cloud of gas and dust. It then describes the formation of our planet's oceans, and speculates about the places where life could have begun nearly four billion years ago. It presents the three requirements for the nourishment of life on Earth -- and most likely anywhere else in the universe: warmth, water, and organic material.Today life on Earth flourishes in environments ranging from benign to downright alien, and the show examines the variety of lifeforms that populate our planet: from the creatures of the land, to organisms that exist in the extreme conditions around volcanic vents on the ocean floors. The possibility that life might exist in similar extreme environments elsewhere in the solar system prompts an exploration of two other worlds where the requirements for life might be met: Mars and the icy Jovian moon Europa. The search for other life-bearing planets moves to starbirth nurseries in the Orion Nebula. Other stars provide harbor for planets, and the program illustrates one technique today's scientists use to look for extrasolar planets. A science fiction-style ending portrays spaceship crews exploring the shores of an alien ocean far from Earth, in a scene taken from humanity's distant future.

Oceans In Space is an original work commissioned in 1997 by the Springfield Library and Museums Association for the Seymour Planetarium of Springfield, Massachusetts.

MarsQuest

Narrated by Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek movies and TV)

MarsQuest is a NEW planetarium show, based on the format of our immensely popular 1988 program The Mars Show, and replaces it in our catalog.
In the first section, "Homage," we trace Mars through history -- from an "incantation" of the various War God forms given by different cultures, to the early observations of Schiaparelli and Lowell, and the infamous "canals" which led to science-fiction stories about Martians. We hear excerpts from H. G. Wells "War Of The Worlds" and Edgar Rice Burroughs's "Barsoom" novels.
"Mars In Focus" details the Mars of our time -- as seen in the night sky, through binoculars and telescopes, and from our Mars explorations. Mission findings from Viking, Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor feature reports on Mars weather, climate, and areology. We compare the climate and terrain of Earth and Mars, and present the current thinking about the areologic history of the planet, and a rationale for future exploration.
"Mars In The Future" examines where on Earth we can prepare to live on Mars, what will be needed to get crewed missions there, and what the first landing may be like.
The show ends with "Rhapsody On A Red Planet," a poetically-styled "ode to Mars", this time from a future perspective; tracing the efforts that led to our first footsteps on the Red Planet.

Show package includes performance license, script/production notes book, 298 slides, all in digital form on data CD, ready to make into slides , soundtrack, and reference video.

HUBBLE Vision

HUBBLE Vision is the 1994-5 addition to the Loch Ness Productions library of planetarium show packages. It's much more than an update of our 1991 show, HUBBLE: Report From Orbit. It gives your audiences a good look at four years of discoveries made by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Starting with the 1990 launch and deployment, we document Hubble's initial troubles and bad press, followed by the success of the First Servicing Mission. The show then explores the Hubble universe -- from nearby planets out to the edge of the cosmos. Included are the astounding images from Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9's crash into Jupiter; views of Mars, Saturn, and Pluto; proplyds in the Orion Nebula; rings around Supernova 1987a; and jets shooting from active galactic nuclei, powered by black holes. Using uncomplicated explanations, the show gives everyone a look at Hubble's optical discoveries as well as its achievements in ultraviolet spectroscopy.
Our slides of Hubble images are shot from original photographs supplied by the Space Telescope Science Institute, NASA, ESA, and by scientists working directly with HST data. But we've taken care to frame (and in some cases, to enhance) NASA's release prints for optimal planetarium display, and we've created color artwork and graphics to supplement and illustrate other points of the show. Best of all, each slide is already masked and mounted in a Wess glass mount.
We've created HUBBLE Vision to bring the Hubble's exciting discoveries to audiences of all ages. It's a factual journey through the universe, seen through the unblinking eye of one of the world's premier telescopes -- done in the professional style you expect from Loch Ness Productions.

Larry Cat In Space

Larry Cat In Space is a playful, imaginative cartoon presentation about an inquisitive cat who takes a trip to the Moon. Through Larry's eyes, we observe his human family, a group of enthusiastic sky-watchers. Larry notes how human time differs from cat time. Diana takes a job on the Moon, and sadly leaves Larry behind. Larry figures out a way to hide in her clothes trunk. The trunk and Larry are loaded onto the Space Plane, which takes him to space station Freedom.
From there, he is transferred to the Lunar Shuttle. During weightlessness, the trunk opens. Larry floats out into the cabin, and looks out the window. When Diana discovers Larry, he leaps to greet her, but sails over her head, since he only weighs two pounds in lunar gravity. He meets the rest of Imbrium Village's inhabitants, including the evil Commander Stone, who orders Diana to return Larry to Earth. The Moon base crew petitions to keep Larry, and the Commander relents. He even makes Larry a cat space suit. When Larry ventures outside, he spots the Earth, looking a lot like the Moon did from the porch at home.

Larry Cat In Space is primarily targeted at grades 1-3, although everyone loves an entertaining, fun story! Parents and children alike will enjoy the show, and learn something about the Moon, too!

Light Years From Andromeda

Narrated by Michael Dorn (Worf of Star Trek movies and TV)
A beam of light leaves the Andromdeda Galaxy and travels across the void of intergalactic space. On a planet located in a nearby galaxy, intelligent life evolves. As the light speeds across the light years, over the course of centuries, the primitives on the planet form cultures and civilizations -- and begin to wonder about the universe surrounding them. Their awareness of the night sky increases, as the beam of light draws nearer to their planet. When the light reaches the Earth, some of the descendants of the early hunters have just escaped the bonds of their world's gravity, and visited the Moon. In modern times, scientific study of space help the planet's current inhabitants to understand the properties of light, and the ways that understanding shapes our further knowledge of the universe.
Illustrated concepts include:

  • Light years and light speed
  • A brief history of man's evolution and beliefs of the heavens
  • Absorption and scattering of light by gas and dust in our atmosphere and galaxy
  • Lunar laser ranging

MAGELLAN: Report From Venus

The Magellan radar-mapping mission to Venus was extraordinarily successful; the spacecraft returned more data than all NASA's previous planetary missions combined. Now, MAGELLAN: Report from Venus brings Magellan's images to you and your audiences!
In this half-hour planetarium show, we follow Magellan's progress, from its launch through the most significant discoveries. Included are spectacular images of volcanoes, impact craters and landslides. Important planetary science topics of volcanism, tectonism, impact cratering are covered; and we discuss radar imaging, the history of Venus exploration, and compare Earth and its "sister planet".
Over half of the show's slides are actual Magellan images, but not just stock NASA release pictures; we've framed, masked and customized many of them for optimal planetarium usage. Naturally, there are plenty of original art works and graphics, including a magnificent 12-slide panorama of the Venusian surface.

More Than Meets The Eye

After telescope viewing sessions, how many times have you heard comments like these? "Yeah, I thought I saw something -- but I'm not sure what it was I was supposed to see . . ." and "But I thought it was gonna look real big and colorful . . . that fuzzy blotch is all there is"?
Most planetarium programs show excellent images of planets and galaxies, taken from spacecraft or big observatories. Then, when people look at the real thing through a telescope or binoculars, they're understandably dismayed that what they see "isn't like in the planetarium".
Yet photographs taken through low-power instruments still look like photographs, not like what someone actually sees with the naked eye.
So artist Tim W. Kuzniar created original paintings depicting various planets and deep-sky objects as people can actually expect to see them using binoculars and four- or eight-inch telescopes. "MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE" features that artwork, then compares the naked-eye views from our back yard (or planetarium parking lot) with observatory astrophotos and spacecraft images.
We briefly discuss the effects of atmospheric turbulence; that stars have different colors; and how only time exposures produce brilliant colors in galaxies and nebulae. The point is made that, although we don't see celestial objects in glorious color from our back yard, to know that a faint smudge is really a stellar city or a place where stars are born can spark the imagination, and make the search worthwhile.
"MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE" includes winter, spring, and summer night-sky scenes, so something mentioned in the show will be prominent in the sky that night, no matter when you show it. If you don't have a local panorama scene already installed, the show includes a 3-section partial pan of a generic "backyard", and a single slide of the same artwork for use in a wide-angle-lens projector if you don't have a pan system. A "ripple wheel"-type special-effect to simulate a telescopic view with atmospheric turbulence is suggested, but not required.
"MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE" will be a perennial favorite; a work-horse for your planetarium show schedule, and the perfect way to start out the evening's star party!

Sky Quest

Narrated by Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres of TV's Star Trek: Voyager)
Come along with a young woman on her personal quest to find a special place in the night sky, from her childhood adventures on Mars (via a cardboard rocket), to the discovery of her "birthday star" that led her to become an astronomer and build a mountain observatory to further her lifelong fascination with the heavens. She shares her telescope views of the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn with us; points out stars and constellations; and encourages everyone to make the time to look up, even if stargazing in urban areas with light pollution.
Sky Quest is an entertaining and educational exploration of the night sky that appeals to family members of all ages. Grade-school children may identify most with the main character depicted as an 8-year-old "astronaut" in the 5-minute live-action video shown before the rest of the planetarium projectors are introduced. The show features a captivating first-person narrative, voiced by Roxann Dawson of TV's Star Trek: Voyager.
The show package comes with your choice of DVD or CAV videodisc containing the show's video sequences and soundtrack. The DVD offers a 5.1 surround sound mix; the laserdisc has a stereo mix with audio on analog channels 1 and 2 and SMPTE on digital channel 3.
98 masked, all in digital form on data CD, ready to make into slides include two all-sky scenes as well as one 360- and two 180-degree panoramas. The pans will be custom-made for your pan system's specs if you provide your DigiDomeTM .INI file (contact us for details).
We include a single-screen reference video, so you can easily see and hear how everything fits together in a typical installation. And by loading the SPICE AutomationTM cue file provided, you'll save hours of typing and programming time.
The stars and constellations pointed out in Sky Quest are primarily Northern hemisphere objects. While we see NASA and U.S.A. insignia during our astronaut child's cardboard rocket scene, the show's universal themes can appeal to non-American audiences too. For those wishing to translate and record narrations in other languages, we offer an additional narrationless soundtrack.
Sky Quest was produced in 1996 by Loch Ness Productions for the Albert Einstein Planetarium of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air & Space Museum, and is being distributed by Sky-Skan Inc.

The Voyager Encounters

Narrated by Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek movies and TV)
This is the definitive summary, recapping all of Voyager's encounters with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in one convenient, thorough documentary. The show discusses the functions of Voyager's instrument packages; the highlights of each flyby; and compares and contrasts each of the planets atmospheres and magnetic fields, their moons and ring systems.
It can fill the niche for "basic Solar System show" in any planetarium's schedule, and it shows successfully in large and small facilities alike. No special effects are required; it runs as a stand-alone slide show.
We shoot many of our slides from original JPL 8"x10" photos obtained during the encounters; the quality is as close to the original as possible. The slides are framed for optimal planetarium usage, and illustrate each scene with visually balanced images -- sizes, colors and perspectives are all coordinated.
Also included: some rare and visually stunning Jupiter and Io natural and false-color images that mate to form dissolve pairs. Over 100 slides are original artwork, graphics, and photo composites -- from a lap-dissolve schematic of Voyager's instruments to the Titan surface Voyager never saw.
"The Voyager Encounters" is the real "meat and potatoes" of planetarium shows -- a factual yet entertaining trip to the outer planets, done in the professional style you've come to expect from Loch Ness Productions. With Patrick Stewart's name recognition, you'll have a show guaranteed to be a winner with your audiences.

The Cowboy Astronomer

Narrated by cowboy humorist Baxter Black
Howdy folks! We'll bet you've never heard of a cowboy astronomer, right?
Well, neither had we. Frankly, a show linking cowboys and astronomy was not something we'd ever thought of doing. That is, not until that fateful day in January 1992, when Nello Williams, planetarium director in Gillette, Wyoming, left a message on our answering machine, saying "Hey guys, let's do a show about cowboys and the stars."
It turns out that Gillette was hosting the National High School Rodeo Championships, and Nello wanted a special show to present to the folks in town for the occasion, as well as something new and different to run for his district's school shows.
Frankly, we were skeptical -- we didn't see what cowboys and astronomy had in common. But for many years, we've been asking ourselves "what can we do that's new and different"? And since we happened to live out in the West at the time, who better to come up with a show with a Western flair?
Carolyn started thinking. Cowboys spend a lot of time out where the skies are dark, and so do astronomers. Astronomers roam the sky looking for stars and planets, just like cowboys roam the range looking for cattle. Astronomers just might be the ranchers of the universe! Our culture has paired "cowboys and Indians" for decades, so Native American sky legends are a natural. Nowadays, we're modern folk -- even in the Rocky Mountains, with cellular phones in our pickup trucks, and satellite dishes to watch TV. We're linked to space in lots of ways -- and folks often see it better on the last frontier (as compared to "space -- the final frontier").
Inspiration kicked in. Nello got his special planetarium show, and now Loch Ness Productions offers it to you -- "The Cowboy Astronomer."

'Tis The Season

We all know the planetarium Christmas show can be one of the most difficult and sometimes controversial programs you can present. Audiences want and expect Christmas shows; for many facilities, it's the most popular program of the year -- often bringing in repeat visitors -- and one that can be a real money-maker.
But given that Christmas is essentially a religious holiday, how can a planetarium give a show that fits in with the season, yet not offend the sensibilities of audience members who represent a wide range of belief systems?
And while the Christmas show can provide "warm fuzzies" -- and fill a need in your programming lineup -- for a program that only runs a few weeks each year, it often takes as much time to prepare and install as a longer-running show.
Yes, offering a Christmas show certainly can present a dilemma...
It's a dilemma we at Loch Ness wrestled with, when trying to decide if we could meet your requests for a Christmas show.
While we'd seen plenty of Christmas shows at planetaria over the years, most convinced us what approaches we didn't want to take. We knew we didn't want to bore the audience with elaborate 7 or 6 B.C. versus 3 or 2 B.C. arguments. We didn't want to record long orations from the Scriptures, or take a predominantly Christian-oriented viewpoint with a token mention of other faiths. But, what did we want to do?
